Differences between ICSE and ISC

Council of Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) is a highly respected and recognised board in India. The CISCE offers two examinations for different levels, namely, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ICSE) for Class X and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) for Class XII. Both have their origins in the Cambridge curriculum (IGCSE). CISCE examination scores are accepted by universities in India and abroad. The curriculum is extremely flexible and students can learn from a variety of subject books, instead of a single prescribed text book. Students of ISC and ICSE schools also have a wealth of courses to pick from. 

Here is the overview of ISCE and ISC exams:

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) -  Class X

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) provides a framework for a ten year course from Class I to Class X. The ISCE requires students to study six subjects as well as Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW). To be eligible for  the examination, the students should have compulsorily completed the following:  A third language from at least Class V to Class VIII (Internal Examination), Art (Internal Assessment),  Socially Useful Productive Work and Community Service (Internal Assessment), Physical Education and Education in Moral and Spiritual Values. 

Students can select subjects from three subject groups. At the end of Class X, students appear for their exam through their respective ISCE schools, for subjects of their choice. Group I comprises of compulsory subjects: English, Second Language and History, Civics and Geography. Group II allows students to select two or three subjects from among Mathematics, Science, Economics, Commercial Studies, a Modern Foreign Language, a Classical Language and Environmental Science. Students can select any one subject from Group III. Students are not allowed to pick the same subjects from both Group II and Group III. They are to typically offer both Science and Mathematics from Group II.

Any of the valid subject combinations will be accepted into ISC (Class XII)

Indian School Certificate (ISC) - Class XII

Indian School Certificate (ISC) is a two year course, offered in English. A student can apply for Class XI after successful completion of Class X or its equivalent. It is not applicable to private students.
A student who has passed English and four other written subjects under their respective, recognised board at a Class X / equivalent examination taken at the same sitting may be considered eligible for admissions to Class XII. 
A student who opts for ISC has English as a compulsory subject and can have three, four or five elective subjects. SUPW and community service is also compulsory. Class XI examinations will be graded internally by the school and the Class XII examinations will be evaluated externally by the Council.

How to prepare before starting with IB DP

If you are a student who has enrolled into the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) or the parent of a future IB DP student, you can be assured that commitment to the programme lets one chart a steady course towards university. The IBO also collaborates with certain universities for developing recognition policies for accepting IB graduates.

According to the IBO, DP a student has the option of selecting courses from six subject groups, three of which will be taken at standard level (SL) and three at higher level (HL), with two mandatory languages.

One also has the option of obtaining a bilingual diploma by opting for studies in language and literature in 2 languages. A student can explore the type of literary texts that will be analysed for this purpose.

An IB DP student also has to read, analyse and assimilate works studied in translation. By exploring such works well in advance, with the help of a good quality translation, a student can grasp the delicacy of interpreting a translated work and prepare for their assessments in the same.

Examination pattern and schedule: The IBO publishes sample examination papers and the examination schedule for the forthcoming sessions on its website. The availability of these details beforehand will help you make long term plans for your school work as well as your university placement preparations.

Managing deadlines: Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a mandatory component of the IB DP Programme. TOK assessment consists of an oral presentation and a 1600 word essay. The extended essay component of the core requires the student to produce a 4000 word long essay, which is self-directed and based on their own research. 8 things you should say to your child

In an earlier post titled ‘Things you should not say to your kids during exam season’, we examined some phrases which might be detrimental to your child. Words can be used to heal or harm. When used in the right way, the right words can bring you closer to your child. It can give them a sense of safety, encouragement, confidence and inspiration.

Here are some of the things that you can say to your child often:

1.    Listen to them: Listening is often more important that speaking, during a conversation. You might be surprised that you do not know all the problems that your child is facing at school or with peers. Make it known that despite your own busy schedule and stress, you acknowledge their concerns.
2.    I am here for you: Assure them that no matter what they are going through, you are available to support them. This does not excuse them from being accountable for their mistakes. However, they need to know that you will stand by them as they work their way through any situation
3.    Appreciate the effort: “I really appreciate how hard you worked for … “ or “You put in some great efforts to ..” helps your child know that the process and effort matters as much or even more as their achievements at the end. Motivating them to put in more hard work is a lot easier from this place.
4.    Offer specific praise: Eg. “You have organised your study schedule very well, with sufficient time for revision and play.” is an example of praising a very specific effort of your child. It reflects your own part in taking the time to understand your child’s efforts. It shows that you notice and care.
5.    You do not have to be perfect: Setting absolute perfection as the standard can make your child feel disappointed and demotivated. Letting them know that trying for massive improvement and excellence over perfection sets the tone for far more progress.
6.    I love you: Failures, challenges, mistakes and difficult days should not change the fact that you love your child. Remind them of this everyday.
7.    I believe in you: Let your children know that you believe in their abilities, talents and dreams. They may feel demotivated by failures, but you know for sure that they are capable individuals.
8.    You bring joy into my life: Children light up our lives from the moment they are born. Parenting brings with it extreme highs and lows. We usually complain about them at length to whoever listens. They are often still one of the greatest sources of reward, and joy in the life of a parent. Let your child know that.

Todos sabemos que hoy en día el español es el tercer idioma más hablado del mundo después del mandarín y el inglés, y parece que en los próximos años tomará la segunda posición. El español se habla en prácticamente todo el continente Americano, Brasil es el único país de Latinoamérica en el que se habla portugués y, a día de hoy, podríamos recorrer prácticamente todo Estados Unidos y no decir ni una sola palabra en inglés. Probablemente éste sea un gran motivo para comenzar a aprenderlo.

En la sociedad en la que vivimos las prioridades cambian según las necesidades económicas, según dónde se halle la oportunidad de negocio, y así, los sistemas educativos han ido cambiando de idioma dependiendo de hacia qué continente viren los mercados internacionales que generan mayores ingresos.
Mi experiencia como profesora, pero sobre todo la personal, me ha enseñado que, para aprender un idioma, hace falta tener una buena motivación y cada uno debe encontrar la suya. Los niños en edad escolar necesitan encontrar su “porqué” para estar interesados en cambiar (unas horas a la semana) su idioma materno por uno que se habla a miles de kilómetros de su país. A ésta labor nos hemos de dedicar los profesores; ayudarles a buscar una motivación que les haga desear aprender otro idioma es parte del trabajo en el aula, y una vez la encuentran, el aprendizaje se hace fluido.
Soy una viajera incansable, he vivido en varios países y he conocido a mucha gente maravillosa gracias a hablar inglés y español. He recorrido Sudamérica con mi lengua materna y me he comunicado con gentes de Paraguay, Argentina, Venezuela y Cuba. Aprendí inglés para poder vivir en el país que me acogió, en Reino Unido, y gracias a eso hoy estoy aquí y puedo comunicarme con ellos, conocerles, enseñarles. Aprender un idioma, sobre todo uno que habla tanta gente alrededor del mundo, es un regalo porque da la oportunidad no sólo de trabajar en diferentes países sino también de conocer a muchísima gente de diferentes nacionalidades, disfrutar de los lugares y ser capaz de desenvolverte en ellos. Si soy capaz de transmitir a mis alumnos la maravillosa experiencia de poder comunicarse y conocer a otros seres humanos a través del idioma, si consigo que cada uno encuentre un motivo por el que desea viajar por el mundo, ver otros lugares, conocer a sus gentes y comunicarse con ellos, entonces, mi labor está hecha, porque yo les podré enseñar los primeros pasos del español, pero ellos y su motivación personal harán el resto.

Education World magazine has recently published its list of best schools in the India. We are listed in the category of International Day and Boarding Schools. This survey was jointly conducted by c fore and Education World magazine. over the past four months 120 c fore field personnel interviewed 11,660 parents, principals, teachers and senior school students in 27 cities countrywide and persuaded them to rate schools in their region on a ten-point scale across 14 parameters of education excellence.
This year i.e. for 2015, Trio World Academy - Best International School in Bangalore is ranked at 13th in India and 5th in Karnataka. Category wise our rankings are given below.
